Fly Ash Derived Zeolites in the Removal of Toxic Compounds

The present paper describes the previous obtained results concerning purification of gases, water and sewages from toxic components such as mercury, radionuclides and petroleum substances. The tested materials constitute synthetic zeolites obtained in hydrothermal reaction, i.e., Na-X, Na-P1, and natural zeolite clinoptilolite. The zeolites (Na-X, Na-P1 and clinoptilolite) needed for mercury capture were activated by silver ions; however, for the removal of petroleum substances (Na-X and Na-P1) as well as radionuclides (Na-P1) raw zeolite materials were used. The review of the results have shown that zeolites used both for mercury capture and the removal of radionuclides, as well as petroleum substances, can be considered promising sorbent materials

This study presents the results of experiments dealing with the possibility of transforming F class fly ash into a zeolitic material. Two types of synthesis methods were used in the research: hydrothermal and low-temperature synthesis. As a result of alkaline reaction of fly ash with NaOH, all experimental cases yielded zeolitic material which is rich in Na-X phase. The mineralogical composition as well as the physico-chemical properties in Na-X phase was obtained. The mineralogical composition as well as the physico-chemical properties of the obtained material are explored and the feasibility of practical application is shown.W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań nad możliwością transformacji popiołu lotnego klasy F w materiał zeolitowy. Wykorzystano dwie metody syntezy: hydrotermalną i niskotemperaturową. W wyniku alkalicznych reakcji popiołów lotnych z NaOH w obu przypadkach otrzymano materiał zeolitowy bogaty w fazę Na-X. Zbadano charakter mineralogiczny i właściwości fizykochemiczne otrzymanego materiału oraz przedstawiono możliwości praktycznego wykorzystania

In this study, properties and peculiarities of hydration processes as well as paste microstructure of blended cements containing 10% by weight of natural zeolite were investigated. Free calcium hydroxide content, crystalline hydration products and microstructural architecture of hydrated cement pastes were examined by physical and chemical methods. It was found that the addition of natural zeolite provides formation of an extra amount of fine crystalline ettringite and tobermorite-like calcium hydrosilicates of CSH (B) type in the mineral non-clinker part of Portland cement resulting in strength synthesis of cement stone with high performance properties
